New Solar Power - Tim Kyle

New Solar Power Harvesting Process

We are always in need of positive information on the potential new solar power front.  Luckily, there’s been some very recently: the record of how much of the sun’s energy can be “harvested” for our use has just been broken.  This means, of course, that solar panels will soon be more useful than ever in saving energy by producing it more naturally than so many other sources.

The Science of This New Solar Power Technique

“Australian engineers have [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][built] photovoltaic cells that can harvest an unheard-of 34.5 percent of the Sun’s energy,” breaking the “previous record of 24 percent.”  Not only do these developments mean even more clean energy for the world, but also that it will be reduced in price and will therefore be more appealing to the everyday consumer.  This is a direct result of the new panels being smaller than previous iterations, thereby taking up less space while still managing to be much more productive.

These new solar panels use a sort of layer system to extract solar energy more efficiently than ever: if some of the light slips past one layer, it’s going to be “picked up” by one of the many others as it passes through.  In this way, so much less than in previous products goes unused.

Unfortunately, “they’re harder to maintain and more expensive than the standard single-junction solar cells we’re used to seeing,” so it isn’t likely that they’ll be a common sight on rooftops.  Still, it’s entirely possible that these same scientists will produce similar panels to perch on people’s homes so that they can receive the same benefits.  In the meantime, the “solar towers” that they’re aiming to create for use on a much  larger scale: factories, industries, farms, etc.
