When it comes to any concerns relating to the electrical wiring in your house, you want to bring in an experienced and qualified electrician to address those concerns and fix the problem. Faulty wiring can lead to a devastating fire and other hazards, so choose a qualified electrician to avoid these potential safety issues.
How to Choose a Qualified Electrician
You can put a certain degree of trust in an electrician when he provides evidence of state licensure. Under a state license, there can be two types of electrical professionals. The first is a master electrician. This title ensures the electrician has passed a standardized test and has at least two years of experience working as an electrician. You can be assured he also knows the National Electrical Code, and more specifically, your state’s modifications to that code. He is also qualified to design, install and maintain an entire electrical system. A state license also qualifies a journeyman electrician to do electrical work. A journeyman electrician hasn’t yet qualified as a master electrician which means the law states he cannot plan or design a system, but can install wiring and equipment. Some states require a journeyman electrician to work with a master electrician.
Electricians tend to specialize in specific areas of electrical work. Some work only with new construction while others take on projects where re-wiring an old home is necessary. Some electricians work strictly on service calls where they repair outlets or faulty fixtures. Those who work on remodeling projects often have many years of experience and have mastered wiring techniques and are able to assess the capacity of circuits and decide if additional circuit panels are needed to allow for increased power demands.
If you’re working with a general contractor, most will have a list of trusted electricians. If you are unable to obtain a recommendation, check with your local home builder’s association or electrical supply house. Make sure you describe your project so they can recommend the right electrician for the job.
Finally, you’ll want to interview the electrician. Ask to see a state license. An electrician working on a residential job should carry a minimum of $500,000 in liability insurance and worker’s compensation to cover himself and his workers. Check references and review previous work if possible. A reputable electrician will have his basis covered and you will be good to go.
