Can Ceiling Fan Use Save on Electrical Bills?

You might think that using your ceiling fan in addition to your air conditioning (AC) will not only keep your home cooler, but also make your AC work more efficiently. You may even notice that a room with AC and a ceiling fan feels cooler than a room without one. So, it’s easy to understand how the idea originates; however, this is not necessarily the case. Learn more.

How the Ceiling Fan and AC Really Work

The AC pumps cool air into a room, replacing the hot air with a much more manageable temperature. Its job is to regulate the environment through a cooling process. A ceiling fan doesn’t have the mechanism to actually cool the air: only to circulate it. So, why do you feel cooler in a room that has both AC and a ceiling fan? While the AC is working to modify the temperature in the room, the ceiling fan works by drying sweat on your body. This in turn regulates your body temperature, not the room temperature.

There are steps you can take to keep cool without using unnecessary electricity.

  1. Only use the ceiling fan when you are in the room. This will cut down on overall electricity consumption while also giving maximum benefit from your ceiling fan.
  2. You can also adjust the thermostat on your AC to a higher temperature when you are not going to be home. Using a higher temperature setting inside will still cool your home while you are away without using as much electricity as a lower setting.
  3. Use blackout curtains to help filter out as much outside light as possible, which will make your AC run less.
  4. Schedule routine checks for your cooling system with a trained HVAC professional to make sure your system is running at its optimal level.
