Portable Heaters Safety Tips

Portable heaters are economical, especially when the cost of main heating is high or a system is inefficient at heating the entire house. Portable heaters are efficient in keeping you warm, however, they must be used cautiously. Tim Kyle Electric, an electrician serving Fredrick County, MD, provides the following safety tips for use of portable heaters.

Safety Tips for Portable Heaters

Avoid the use of extension cords. Portable heaters are made of thin wounding wires, which heat up to provide the warmth you need. Thick cables are required to generate the amount of energy needed to create heat: thus, it is advisable to plug into the wall outlet directly. Avoid using extension cords as they might not permit flow of such current continuously without overheating. Power cords should also not run underneath the carpet as they might short-circuit and accidentally catch fire.

Turn off the heater when not in use. Ensure that the portable heater is off when not in use or when you cannot keep an eye on it. Do not rely on automatic shut offs.

Adhere to the 1-meter rule: Keep a portable heater at least 1 meter away from flammable materials such as sofas, curtains, and beds. Place the portable heater on a level surface. Do not use it for other purposes, such as drying clothes or warming food or bedding.

Regularly inspection the portable heater. Frequently check the heater for any malfunction. Avoid using the heater if it is damaged in any way!
