Halloween Lights and Decorations: Don’t Overdo It

Technology has added a new dilemma to Halloween decorating.  Inflatables, blacklights, festive lights, and talking skeletons have started to replace simple jack-o-lanterns. With so much electricity powering Halloween decorations, a homeowner has to be careful not to cause a power surge or start a fire. Learn how to safely decorate with Halloween lights and decorations.

Decorating Safely with Halloween Lights

In order to prevent a power outage, it’s important to check the circuit breaker to find out the amperage your household can carry. Divide the number of watts (the measurement of electricity) by the number of volts being used. It’s also important to know how much volts the outlets produce. To find this out, divide the number of watts your device needs by the circuit’s amperage number. Finally, calculate how many watts your circuit can handle. Multiply the amperage by the number of volts your outlets can produce. When calculating, take into consideration how many other electronics are plugged in and are being used simultaneously.

Consistently using 80% of a circuit’s amperage can cause a temporary surge. A surge processor will protect the any electronics from the effects of a power surge. Surge processors will stop the damage before it is done by a power outage. Individual surge protectors will divert the extra electricity away from the rest of the electronics.

Tips to Consider

  • Decorate with LED lights instead of incandescent strands because they use 20% less energy
  • Avoid overcrowding extension cords and outlets
  • Choose minimal decorations to decrease the chance of a power surge
  • Be sure to turn off the lights inside of the house when powering the outdoor Halloween lights, as much as you can
  • Unplug all of the cords when they are not in use.
