Fire Safety Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are quickly approaching, which means that the annual holiday lights-related fire risks are also going to be relevant again. Make sure that you have a fire safety plan for your family and home in case the tree lights or other electronics malfunction.

“A small flame can turn into a devastating fire in under 30 seconds, so preparation is key.” Fire can grow and spread more quickly than people think, so knowing some fire prevention is absolutely key for at least on member of every household… though, ideally, everyone would know how to safely respond.

Do you have the proper equipment at home to deal with something like this? You should have functional fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and alarms in order to know as soon as possible if a fire has broken out and to then combat it. You should also consider an RCD, or residual current device, which can ensure electrical safety.

Speaking of electrical safety… don’t overload your outlets. If you have a number of electronics and devices plugged into the same outlet, you are creating a higher risk of overload. This is a big risk to fire safety, as are things like heaters (think space heaters) which, if left too close to fabric or other flammable materials, are likely to ignite. Older heaters are also a big risk for carbon monoxide leaks, so install a detector for that, too, if you haven’t already.

Kitchen safety is relevant all throughout the year, but there is a lot of cooking going on during these holidays, and a lot of stress that might distract the chef. Make sure that pots, pans, and ovens aren’t left unattended, and that they’re watched carefully to avoid grease or other fires. You don’t have to stop making cookies and cooked hams, but you should monitor them at all times (and keep kids and pets away!).
