Outdoor Outlets: Are Yours Protected?

Of all the electrical outlets in use around the home, outdoor outlets are among the most vulnerable. Because of their constant exposure to changing weather conditions, outdoor outlets can be a safety hazard. Consequently, failure to properly protect these outlets will result in damage to your home or to your person.

Outdoor Outlets Safety for the Homeowner

To make your outlets safer, follow these tips:

  • Outlet Covers. All outdoor outlets should have a proper weatherproof cover. In the past, many of the outlets simply had a flap that covered the electrical connections. However, in recent years the newer styles include a lid that covers the entire front of the outlet, thus protecting the box completely against the elements. Bubble covers contain a deep lid and grooves allowing for device and extension cords to run out of the bottom while protecting the outlet from inclement weather. Be sure to inspect outdoor outlet covers from time to time. If just one cover is damaged or missing, your outlets are now exposed to the elements and can potentially cause fires.
  • GFCI Outlets. All outdoor outlets must be ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Required by National Electrical Code for outdoor outlets, GFCI receptacles protect your home against shock in the moisture-prone outdoor environment. Weather-resistant receptacles offer protection from humidity, rain, ice, and snow. GFCI outlets reduce the risk of accidental shock and immediately cut power when an abnormality is detected.
