Light Bulb Broken? Follow These Steps

Accidents happen, and sometimes a broken light bulb is unavoidable. If a bulb in your home breaks, then follow these simple tips to replace it carefully and safely.

Tips to Follow if a Light Bulb Breaks

First, stay calm and allow the light bulb to cool off a bit. Next, go to the breaker box and turn off the associated socket switch. Use heavy leather gloves to gather pieces and to remove whatever is left in the socket. Finally, gently twist with your glove or pliers to remove anything that is left.

Additional Steps to Take

Do not vacuum or use a broom to sweep up any glass pieces. Instead, use a piece of cardboard as a broom to pick up the broken pieces and dispose of them. For safety reasons, don’t allow pets or people into the area where the broken light bulb is until it is completely cleaned up. If it broke on a wood floor, use a sticky piece of duct tape to pick up any remaining glass pieces. After the pieces are off of the floor, wipe the floor with a damp paper towel to remove any debris left behind.

If the light bulb landed on carpeting or a rug, shake out the material into a garbage can. Proceed to wash these items in the washing machine. If you stepped on any debris with your shoes on, then you can use a damp towel or wet wipes to wipe clean the bottom of the shoes to remove the glass from them.
