Choosing a Modern Chandelier

Shopping for chandeliers can be like shopping for shoes: a lot of different styles in a lot of different colors. With so many choices, you might not know where to start. Read on to learn more about how to choose the chandelier that is perfect for your space.

Finding the Perfect Chandelier

The first thing you need to do is to determine the size of chandelier you’ll need for each room. This part is easy: measure the room (say its 12′ X 14′). Add those two dimensions together (12+14=26) and consider the total (26) in inches. Now you’re looking for a chandelier that’s 26″ in diameter. The diameter can vary up to two inches either way (24″ to 28″).

Here’s something else to consider: two chandeliers in the same room. They can be used to “zone” a large room, such as creating a conversation area and a separate area for media, dining or playing games.

When you’re selecting a chandelier for your dining room, you’ll need to consider the size of your table and room size. Your chandelier should be 12″ smaller than the width of your table at its widest point. For foyers, great rooms and other large spaces, keep in mind the fixture style and visual weight play a big part. For example, a heavy style can be somewhat smaller than a more delicate, lighter style.

Now comes the fun part. You know the size you’re after; now, pick the perfect chandelier to match your taste. There are a wide range of chandeliers made from multiple materials (plastic, glass, metal, wood, and crystal). Rustic chandeliers have been popular throughout 2019. These are generally made of wrought iron with nature inspired accents. The modern style for 2020 includes geometric designs, multiple materials, and the color black. Dark shades are stylish and provide contrast with brighter rooms. A bonus: dark shades are relevant for any room design. Geometric designs feature clear lines that allow you to have certain parts of the chandelier brighter than others. Combining different materials can make a chandelier appear unique and custom made.
