A Lightbulb Dilemma: LED or Fluorescent bulbs?

Are you an environmentally-conscious homeowner who is searching for a long-lasting light bulb? LEDs and fluorescent bulbs are longer lasting and more efficient. However, it is often hard to choose between these two types of bulbs. Read on to learn more about LED and Florescent bulbs so you can make an informed choice and purchase.

The Pros and Cons of LEDs

LED bulbs can be bought in a selection of colors; these range from blue-white to warmer orange hues. This allows customers to create the right atmosphere in their home. Another advantage is that LED bulbs can easily be dimmed, making them great if you have lighting in your home that can be adjusted. LEDs can also be used in technology, which needs a smart bulb. They can be programmed to come on at a particular time, change color, and sense motion.

LEDs are more expensive than standard bulbs, although they do last longer. They also may be less environmentally friendly than first thought because they do contain heavy metals. It’s advisable to avoid LEDs if you suffer from light sensitivity or photophobia. This is especially true of blue-white LEDs.

The Pros and Cons of Fluorescent Light Bulbs

One of the major benefits of using florescent bulbs is that they are cheaper than LEDs. Like LEDs, they also have a long lifespan. This is estimated to be up to 10 times longer than standard bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are great for people with light sensitivity problems as the light produced by these bulbs is warmer.

There are, however, a few disadvantages of using florescent light bulbs. The color produced by the bulbs can seem unnatural and can also cause eye strain. Fluorescent bulbs are slow to light up to full brightness and don’t work well in cold temperatures. They also emit ultraviolet radiation and can break fairly easily. This leads to a risk of mercury exposure which is why they need to be carefully disposed. Another disadvantage is that fluorescent bulbs can’t be dimmed.
