How to Choose the Right LED Bulbs

You want the best for your home, including the best light bulbs. There are various light bulbs available: incandescent, compact fluorescent lights (CFL), light-emitting diode (LED), and more! So which do you choose? LED bulbs are definitely more beneficial. Here’s what you need to know about LED bulbs.

Advantages of LED Bulbs

LED bulbs are the most popular type of bulb because they are

  • Energy-efficient. LED light bulbs consume less energy. When compared to traditional light bulbs, LEDs have an energy-efficiency between 80% and 90%.
  • Long-lasting. They last between 50,000 to 100,000 hours which is two to four times longer than traditional lighting options.
  • Flexible. LEDs are smaller than traditional bulbs, so you can easily incorporate them into various applications.
  • Safer. Heat emission is a top safety concern with other bulbs. In contrast, LEDs emit little to no forward heat. They function on a low-voltage electrical system, therefore, they consume and require less power which equates to less heat.

When choosing specific types of LED bulbs for your home, consider the following:

  • Brightness (lumens). Look for lumens instead of watts. 100 watts is equal to 1,600 lumens.
  • Light appearance (warm or cool). The light appearance refers to the lighting’s temperature, such as cool or warm. To obtain a warm appearance, choose a bulb that has between 2,700 and 3,000k. Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (k). To get a cool temperature, choose a bulb that has 5,000k or less.
  • Dimmers. The dimmers and bulbs you choose must be compatible. Older dimmer switches are designed to work with incandescent bulbs, so you’ll need to hire an electrician in White Marsh to upgrade your dimmers.
