Steps for Electrical Inspection

To make sure your electrical system is working correctly, take the following steps:

  • Check all cords and wires on your home appliances and electrical devices. If you notice the cords or wires are frayed, exposed, loose or otherwise visible, discontinue using them until you can get them repaired or replaced.
  • Pay attention to your lights. Are they flickering? Do you have sockets where you have to replace bulbs more than other areas of the home, or areas where bulbs seem to burn out more often? Do lights come on immediately when you flip the switch?
  • Inspect your outlets. Are they working properly? Touch the wall around the outlets. Is the wall hot? If so, this could be a sign of a loose wire or short circuit. Are the outlets free from items that could cause injury or damage? Are you using the right outlet for appliances and other electrical equipment? Also, make sure that when you plug in an item that the it fits firmly against the socket. There should not be a gap nor should there be a burning smell.
  • If you have children, childproof your home. Cover outlets with approved coverings to keep children from inserting objects into the outlet. Be sure to secure any cords or wires that children may be around.
  • Always check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly.
