Saving Power with a Few Simple Changes

Residents can make small changes to their lifestyle and save a considerable amount of money on their home electric bill. When residents are saving power, they are also saving money. Cut down on your bills while doing your part in helping the environment.

Save Money by Saving Power at Home

During the day you can save money by turning off unnecessary lights and allowing more natural sunlight into your home. Open the blinds, let the light in, and you’ll be surprised how little you actually need to turn on the lights in the first place. A window that faces south lets the most natural sunlight infiltrate the home. At night, the energy conservation doesn’t stop. Instead of turning on the large, more energy-consuming main light, utilize table lamps and desk lamps that use smaller bulbs and less energy than the larger overhead lights.

During the summer, energy consumption is at a high in many areas where the temperatures are hot and humid. Air conditioners must work harder in order to keep up with those demands. Raise the temperature of the air conditioner to 70 degrees and it can translate into huge savings. Utilize the energy-saver function on the air conditioner as well. Consider running the air conditioner part time and utilize a ceiling fan to save on your electric bill. A ceiling fan has the ability to make a room feel ten degrees cooler and will help in your plan to start saving power more and more.

While open blinds and windows can bring in lots of natural sunlight, in the summer it can actually hurt your home energy bill. Save money during the hot summer months by keeping as much of the hot summer air and sunlight out of your house as possible. It will make the room feel cooler. In the summer, 40% of unwanted heat can come in through your windows, so keep this in mind.

When you upgrade your appliances look for products with the ENERGY STAR label. These appliances can save you money at home on your electric bill. Household appliances can eat up as much as 13% of your average home electric bill, but ENERGY STAR appliances save money. They use 10-20% less than standard appliances, which means saving power more now than ever.

Turn off electronics that are not in use. Often times, many electronics still draw power even when you’re not using them. Put your desktop or laptop to sleep when you are not using it, and do not leave them plugged in and using power if you are finished using them.
