How Can You Find an Energy Leak? - Tim Kyle Electric

How Can You Find an Energy Leak?

An energy leak can arise due to anything from a television on standby to a drafty window. In order to maintain optimal energy efficiency, or if you notice that your energy bill has gone up unexpectedly, check for an energy leak.

Having a comprehensive audit from your electrician will alert you to an energy leak, but taking a look around for the energy leak yourself can help for the time being. Anything from old lighting fixtures to gaps in doors and windows will create an energy leak and, in turn, increase your energy bill.

Find an Energy Leak

  • Check your lighting. Replacing old lighting fixtures with modern LED’s can dramatically lower your energy bill. To further increase energy efficiency, add lighting controls. Lighting controls can allow for setting lights on a timer so that they are not left on while you’re at work all day, or sense when there is motion in the room for lights to turn on.
  • Check exterior doors. Metal exterior doors, even when insulated, will create an energy leak. If possible, replace metal doors with fiberglass. Fiberglass doors are insulated and will keep cold and hot air out while maintaining your house’s comfort temperature.
  • Notice light. “In one facility, the plant engineer noticed a 4-inch-wide gap in an exterior wall, extending from the floor to the 30-foot ceiling. This was a major source of airflow between the interior and the exterior. It was hidden from view of the main production area. The plant engineer found it only because he purposely walked down the outside walls looking for problems.”
  • Listen for working computers or other appliances. Listen for appliances that are constantly working or not properly in standby mode. Machines that aren’t in standby mode will increase your energy bill.
  • Find make-up air heat exchangers. “If you don’t have them, your make-up air is adding significant load to your HVAC system.”

If looking for an energy leak is not successful, scheduling an energy audit will be your best bet. For more information on energy audits, get in touch with Tim Kyle Electric today.
