Electrical Safety - Tim Kyle Electric

Electrical Safety All Year Round

As this month of electrical safety continues, awareness about the dangers of misusing electrical devices and appliances grows. Companies across the country are working “to help reduce electrically related fatalities, injuries, and property loss.” Part of this effort is informing people about some of the more commonly-found situations in which electricity might be a danger to them or to others.

Take Steps to Promote Electrical Safety

Those within the industry are committed to the safety  of their customers and are therefore trying to educate “the public about important electrical upgrades and information.” By doing this, they hope to raise awareness especially about “lesser-known” dangers, such as drowning following an electrical shock in or near the water.

Another big risk is unguarded outlets, or electrical plugs that are not covered. These are often major hazards to babies and young children who stick their fingers or other objects into the outlet. Even if they are covered, “a study found that 2-4 year olds were able to remove one type of plastic outlet cap within 10 seconds.” If you have children of this age in the house, you have to be absolutely certain that the outlet covers can’t be easily removed.

Experts also talked about the value of surge protection within electrical safety. “A power surge is a sudden and unwanted increase in voltage that can damage, degrade, or destroy electronic equipment,” but a simple surge protector can keep your computer and other electronics from coming to harm. There are different kinds of protection, whether one for the entire home or just for an outlet, so speak with a contractor to find out which works the best for your situation.

Though there are more regulations and laws passed all the time in order to keep people safe, accidents happen. Use your good judgment in order to stay safe all year-round, and particularly in the summer when around bodies of water. If you want more information about safe practices when dealing with live electricity, then get in touch with Tim Kyle Electric. You can talk to an expert about new installations of lighting and wiring, among other things, for your home or business.
