Energy Saving Tips

Tip #1 – Turn off electronics when not in use

During the day, many people are at work while their electronics are home and running. It is a good idea to turn off power strips that aren’t in use, or purchase smart power strips which turn off when not in use. While many electronics are idle, they still use electricity as they are in a “stand by” mode. That means the home computer that you always keep on is costing you valuable dollars. Try turning them off before you go to work. Another electronic that could be altered during the day is the heating and cooling system. Program your system so that they kick on a little more once the evening falls. Other small things to keep in mind are turning lights, whether inside or outside, off during the day or when leaving rooms, turning off unnecessary fans, setting timers on televisions used at night time, and turning off music devices.

Tip #2 – Run large electronics only when necessary

While it is convenient to run a load of laundry for a few important items of clothing, it is best to only run electronics when they are full. Luckily, most washers and dryers have cycle size options, allowing the user to save energy and water. It is still more efficient to run a large load of laundry, but in a pinch you can get the job done without feeling too wasteful. Dishwashers are another electronic that should always be run when full. The amount of water and energy used by a dishwasher is only worth expending if there are a lot of dishes being cleaned. This is one of the biggest energy draining electronics in our homes when not used correctly.

Tip #3 – Invest in energy-saving appliances

With technologies advancing so quickly, most all new appliances contain some energy saving feature. If you have the money to invest, research the appliance you are about to purchase. Read customer reviews, ask your electrician if they have any advice on the best appliance, and make sure that you make a list of all features you want in an appliance before you purchase it. Large appliances can be a big investment but will always save you money. It is also a good idea to look into any tax refunds associated with buying energy efficient products. These are much better for the environment so there are usually incentives to purchase them.

Tip #4 – Do not use heavily outdated appliances

While new appliances will save you money, using heavily outdated appliances will drain your bank account. Many people want to stick to the appliances they have as they might be “time tested” or “tried and true”. While that might be true, they can sometimes be unsafe and not up to current electrical safety standards. Outdated appliances most often times run on heavy amounts of electricity and do not work as efficiently as newer ones.

It is always a good idea to thoroughly look at your electricity bill. Many times they will record when energy is used most in your home which allows you to alter the way you interact with your electronics in order to save energy and money. If you notice unexplainable rises in your electricity bill, consider looking at your appliances. Are they outdated? Do they run inefficiently?
