Electrical Upgrade Needed for a New Outdoor Hot Tub

Have you thought about installing your own backyard hot tub? Relaxing in a hot tub feels great after a long workout or as an indulgence on a chilly evening. Contact a quality electrician to learn more about the electrical upgrade that may be required prior to having one installed.

Electrical Requirements for an Outdoor Hot Tub

There are a few different options for hot tubs. These include an in-deck surround, tiered seating, a mosaic or flagstone surround, or privacy walls. You can also choose to have the hot tub installed in-ground, with a machine-excavated hole. Some people on a budget may opt to have the hot tub simply placed on their deck.

You can either have your hot tub wired directly into your home’s energy supply or simply plug the tub into an exterior outlet. Hot tubs have two different electrical requirements, 110V or 220V. The 110V hot tubs are the type that plug into an outlet. Although depending on your exterior outlet, you may need an electrical upgrade. A professional Hampstead electrician can review your outlet and tell you for sure.

The 220V hot tubs are a little more powerful, and as such, require additional electricity to heat the tub. These are considered “wired” hot tubs and will require additional wires to be incorporated into the overall wiring in your home. Note that these aren’t a simple plug-in. For a wired hot tub, you’ll need a professional electrician to install it. You may even need an electrical upgrade.

There are several reasons why a wired hot tub may be the better choice. Wired hot tubs heat faster and stay hot longer. If you live in a colder area, these tubs can give you the amount of heat you need on a chilly night. In cold weather, plug-in hot tubs take a long time to heat up, and even then, you may only have lukewarm water. If you plan to use the hot tub often, a wired hot tub will heat and cool down more quickly. Why wait for hours before being able to use it?
