Reduce Electric Bills in the Wintertime

Keeping your home warm during the cold winter months can be expensive. Many people don’t realize that there are things you can do to reduce your heating costs. By following a few simple tips, you can significantly reduce your electric bills in the wintertime.

Ways to Lower Your Electric Bills During Colder Months

Have your furnace inspected before the cold sets in. The furnace is the key to keeping your home warm. If you have an improperly-working furnace, your electric bills will be through the roof. Having the furnace inspected ahead of time allows you to have all necessary repairs done before you even have to start heating your home.

Use blinds. Blinds can be very beneficial in helping to maintain comfortable temperatures in a home. Opening the blinds during the day allows the sun to warm the room. Closing them at night can help to trap some of the warm air inside when it gets later in the day (and darker). Many people choose to not only use blinds, but also use thick curtains as insulation on their windows during the colder months of the year.

Add a programmable thermostat. It’s important to know that you don’t have to maintain a consistent temperature in your home. There are programmable thermostats available that you can use to vary the temperature in your home as needed. You can set the temperature to be lower during times when you are away, such as when you are at work. You can then have the temperature raise a few minutes before you will return home so that you can return to a home that is toasty and warm. Lowering the temperature even a few degrees can help to lower your electric bills dramatically during the colder months of the year.
