Electric Bill - Tim Kyle Electric

Electric Bill Numbers May Surprise You in January

How can snowfall make your electric bill rise dramatically? You might assume that it’s all about running the heat more often, but that’s not all. Learn how you can save some energy around the house so you don’t drive up prices in a high-cost time of year for utilities.

Hacks to Prevent a High Electric Bill This Winter

It may be easier to just crank up the heat in the moment, but you may regret it come your next electric bill. Though alternatives to turning on the heat may not be quite so cozy, they exist, and they can save you a lot when it comes to your utility costs. “Even a few degrees difference in sustained, colder temperatures can boost electricity use as heaters have to work harder to keep buildings warm,” and particularly in areas that experienced a more mild November, these changes may surprise customers come January.

The days are certainly getting colder, so consider your habits around the house as the temperature continues to drop. For example, don’t leave the radiator running all day long. Turn it off once you plan to go to bed or if you go out of the house. This is easier if you can control it over your phone, but it shouldn’t be difficult to remember if you make it a part of your routine as you head out. “Every degree lowered can decrease the heating portion of your electric bill by 2 percent,” and each little effort adds up to make a big difference.

Like the heat, your lights shouldn’t be left running all day long. Though it does get darker earlier than ever, you can keep the lights off during the day, provided you aren’t doing light-sensitive work. Invest in energy-efficient fixtures and bulbs so that you aren’t wasting power throughout the evening and night when you need the lights on. Computers are also big energy “vampires,” so consider purchasing energy-saving power strips and plugging all your devices into that.

Again, another appliance/device that can be adjusted is your water heater. This doesn’t mean you  need to start taking cold showers; rather, just adjust (read as: lower) the temperature slightly so that it is comfortable for you without overdoing it. Also, as with the radiator, make sure to adjust more drastically if you are going to be out of town for a while to avoid needlessly running up the electric bill.

There are a lot of ways that you can save electricity this winter without sacrificing heat. To call on a company with decades of experience, get in touch with Tim Kyle Electric.
