During the hot summer months, the sun will warm your roof and the entire structure will absorb the heat. Heat starts in the attic and makes its way to the house’s framing. This transfer heats up the home’s living spaces if air circulation can’t occur. Which is why an attic fan can be beneficial for your home in more ways than one.
The Benefits of an Attic Fan
Attic fans will circulate the air and remove excess heat. Unfortunately attic vents on their own do not complete the job as well. Attic humidity can compromise the structure of the roof. Therefore, using attic fans helps to eliminate humidity which in effect extends the life of your roof. An attic fan will also keep your home at least ten degrees cooler. Instead of your AC working extremely hard to cool off your home, an attic fan can reduce costs up to 30%. Attic fans are also known for their longevity and low maintenance.
The Downside
If the attic is not air-sealed, it is likely that the home will lose some of its conditioned air. This increases the work of the air conditioner and it can lead to dangerous combustion issues. Natural gas water heaters can cause a backdraft and unleash carbon monoxide gas into the home. Attics that have nominal natural ventilation and R-19 ceiling insulation will not benefit from attic fans, because the insulation slows heat from traveling to the living spaces.
When It Is Most Effective
Attic ventilation fans work best if the attic floor is thoroughly sealed, HVAC equipment is well insulated and sealed, and attic insulation is less than R-19. An attic fan can be used temporarily during the summer to decrease the electric bill, but it won’t be the best option in the long run. If the insulation levels are low, increasing them will lower the heating bill in winter as well.
